News Release: Educators Rising Announces Teacher Pipeline Effort

August 03, 2015

Arlington, Va., August 3, 2015 — Communities struggling to recruit, prepare, and retain skilled teachers have a new advocate and partner. Educators Rising, an organization that helps make sure teachers have the experience and skills they need to be ready for the classroom, announced its launch today via its website and new EdRising Virtual Campus online community. Offering a proactive approach to teacher recruitment and development, Educators Rising provides high school students with hands-on opportunities to explore the teaching profession and develop their teaching craft.

“Over 60 percent of teachers teach within 20 miles of where they went to high school,” said Co-Director Dan Brown, a National Board Certified Teacher. “Right now — today — in every community, the next generation of educators is sitting on the student side of the desks. We’re all counting on homegrown teachers to be highly skilled, well-prepared professionals, and our existing pipeline isn’t doing the job well enough.”

At the national level, Educators Rising supports the implementation of cocurricular high school programs where students learn what it means to be a highly skilled teacher and gain clinical teaching experience.

In addition to supporting school-based programs, Educators Rising helps students and teachers connect and deepen their learning through the EdRising Virtual Campus, which guides students on the road to great teaching, featuring a video library of accomplished teachers in action and original content to help students develop their teaching craft and prepare for college. Teachers facilitating the high school programs also have access to a private Teacher Leader Community featuring curricular materials, discussion spaces, and opportunities to connect with experts.

“Teaching has never been more complicated or more important,” said Co-Director Ashley Kincaid. “There is an extraordinary demand for new teachers and an urgent need to close gaps in the teaching workforce. By starting recruitment efforts in high school and helping those students build their identities as rising educators, we have an opportunity to ensure that every community has well-prepared, highly skilled teachers for the future.”

Educators Rising is an evolution of the Future Educators Association, which was initially founded as Future Teachers of America in 1937. It currently has 14,500 students and teachers engaged in more than 750 schools across the country. Educators Rising is powered by PDK International, a network of educators that brings together the top leaders, thinkers, and doers in the field to collaborate and inspire one another. It is headquartered in Arlington, Va.
